John’s interest in composition and the juxtaposition of objects is evident in these paintings.
The compositions are structured vertically around the central axis of the canvas,
placing the main subject directly at its core.
This approach elevates ordinary objects, granting them presence and authority.
While the still life arrangement remains the primary focus, scattered spheres and subtly graduating
backgrounds guide the viewer’s eye across the surface,
adding movement and depth without disrupting the central emphasis.
Familiar motifs from John’s oeuvre: the kimono sisters,
Pearl the nodding cat and the Tiwi Island birds, reappear in this series of paintings.
The paintings invite viewers to find beauty and significance in the ordinary,
transforming familiar objects into enduring subjects of contemplation.
