If you've never taken an art class as an adult the uncertainty about what to expect can be enough to put you off booking. Here's exactly what happens at Duthy Street so you know what you're walking into.
Before you arrive
You'll receive confirmation of your class with details of what to bring and what's provided. Wear something you don't mind getting paint on.
Arriving at the studio
The studio is at 6 Duthy Street Unley, attached to the art supplies store. The workshop has its own entrance where the tutor will welcome you. There are easels, paint-covered tables, work in progress on the walls.
Groups are small deliberately. You'll meet the other people in your class, most of whom are in exactly the same position as you, showing up to try something they've been meaning to do for a while.
The class itself
The tutor will start with a brief introduction to the medium and what you'll be working on in the session. For beginners this usually means understanding how the paint behaves before worrying about making something that looks like anything in particular.
You'll be shown basic techniques, given time to try them yourself and receive specific feedback on what you're doing.
Questions are encouraged throughout rather than saved for the end. If something isn't working the way you expected, say so. That's the point of having a tutor in the room rather than watching a tutorial at home.
At the end
You take your work home with you. Some of it you'll like. Some of it you'll put face-down in a drawer. Both are completely normal.
The honest version
A good art class is relaxed, occasionally frustrating in the way that learning anything new is frustrating and usually enjoyable in a way that's hard to describe until you've experienced it. The satisfaction of making something with your hands, even something imperfect, is real and fairly immediate.
