Adelaide has a reasonable number of places offering art classes for adults but the quality and approach varies significantly. Here's an honest guide to what's available and what to look for before you book.
What to look for in an art class
Small group sizes matter more than almost anything else. A class of six people gets genuinely different instruction to a class of twenty — the tutor can see what you're actually doing, give you specific feedback and adjust their teaching to where you are rather than delivering a one-size-fits-all demonstration. If a class doesn't tell you the maximum group size, ask before booking.
The studio environment matters too. You'll paint better and enjoy it more in a space that feels like a proper working studio rather than a community hall with fold-out tables. Good lighting — ideally natural light — makes a significant difference to how you see colour and value.
What materials are included or required is worth checking. Some classes provide everything, some require you to bring a materials list, some are run from a store where you can purchase what you need on the spot.
What we offer at Duthy Street
We run classes from our studio at 6 Duthy Street Unley in small groups across a range of mediums — watercolour, oils and acrylics for beginners through to more advanced work. Classes are taught by working artists who actually paint in the medium they're teaching, which makes a difference to the quality of instruction you receive.
Being attached to a fully stocked art supplies store means if you need a specific brush, a particular paper or want to try a colour you haven't worked with before, it's right there. Students often find this genuinely useful — you can see and handle materials before buying rather than ordering online and hoping for the best.
Our classes are kept deliberately small so everyone gets proper attention rather than watching a demonstration from the back of the room.
The honest answer on finding the right class
The best class for you is the one where you feel comfortable enough to make mistakes, ask questions and actually enjoy the process. If you finish a class feeling deflated rather than energised, it's not the right class — not a reflection of your ability.
We'd always suggest coming in for a chat before booking anything. We're at 6 Duthy Street Unley and happy to talk through what might suit you. You can also view and book our current classes online.
